ST. MICHAEL'S HOSPITAL

This information is meant to help guide you. If you have any questions, please make sure to ask your residents and site directors.

CLINICS

INFORMATION/TIPS

  • Email the preceptor and their admin to let them know you will be joining them and to ask when/where the clinic will take place, preferably 2 days ahead of time to give them time to respond

    • You will receive an email with a list of contact information from the medical education coordinator 

  • Let the preceptor know you will join later if there is a seminar in the morning 

    • Bring your stethoscope for OB and Gyne clinics. A measuring tape for OB clinics would also be useful if you have one

    • Help clean the room in between patients

DETAILS

  • Storage: usually in the preceptor’s office

  • Lunch: usually a small room to store and heat up food, ask the admin

  • Dress code: Scrubs and business casual, both acceptable

  • Start time: variable, confirm with the preceptor through email

  • Notes: on Soarian or on paper, depends on the clinic and preceptor 


LOCATIONS

  • OB: 61 Queen St E, 4th floor 

  • Gyne/Colposcopy: 61 Queen St E, 5th floor

GYNE

INFORMATION/TIPS

  • Rounding: 

    • Prepare the list: print the signout list, write the vitals on the side, photocopy enough for your team 

    • Prepare the charts: SOAP format, ID, post-op day, vitals, BW, new imaging

  • Chief clinics are on Thursdays only

  • Let the chief resident know you will join later if there is a seminar in the morning

  • If you will be in the OR and there’s a seminar in the morning: Try to introduce yourself to the patient before you start seminar if there is time (in the pre-op area if the OR has not started yet) 

  • Never do a pelvic exam on an unconscious patient in the OR if you did not meet them previously – unless given express permission by the team 

  • Write your name, level of training (CC3), and glove size on the whiteboard in the OR. Grab your gloves and hand them over sterilely to the scrub nurse 

  • Tucking rounds to check on the patients before signing off; done with the chief resident; no notes needed; occurs before 6pm handover

  • Storage: 15th floor CC3 call room in Cardinal Carter South

  • Lunch: Fridge and microwave in 15th floor nursing lounge, food court on Cardinal Carter 6th floor 

  • Dress code: scrubs; business casual for chief clinic on Friday’s

  • Start time: Set by the chief resident the night before (the chief resident will add you to the chat generally by 9pm the day before to set a time for rounding)

  • OR start time: 7:45 Mon-Thurs, 8:45 Fri; (Rounding/teaching comes first) 

  • Notes: 

    • Consults: on the white/yellow consult sheets found in the ED 

    • Wards: paper progress sheets in the charts

    • Patients on the 15th floor


LOCATIONS

  • In-patients: 15th floor Cardinal Carter South 

  • OR: 5th floor Cardinal Carter Wing

  • Chief clinic: 61 Queen St E, 5th floor 

L&D

INFORMATION/TIPS

  • Write your name, level of training (CC3), and phone number on the whiteboard at the nursing station 

  • Useful to exchange phone numbers with the resident at the beginning of the shift

  • Always introduce yourself to the patient before you attend their delivery; check in with the preceptor if you did not get a chance to do so before the patient started pushing 

  • Components: vaginal/cesarean deliveries on L&D, assessing patients in triage

  • Always bring back-up socks! (you may be splashed with bodily fluids)

  • If you know the resident on your team for the day, let them know you will join later if there is a seminar in the morning. If you don’t know, it is fine to find them after and explain that you were at teaching

  • Write your name, level of training (CC3), and glove size on the whiteboard in the OR. Grab your gloves and hand them over sterilely to the scrub nurse

  • Storage: Li Ka Shing lockers or 15th floor call room in a corner

  • Lunch: fridge and microwave in 15th floor nursing lounge, food court on Cardinal Carter 6th floor  

  • Dress code: Scrubs 

  • Start time: 7:00am for postpartum rounding (teaching is also at 7:00am, join when teaching ends), L&D starts at 8:00am 

  • Notes:

    • Triage: on paper

    • Labour Checks: on paper

LOCATIONS

  • SMH Cardinal Carter North 15th floor

  • Typically meet on L&D if you cannot find them

  • OR for CS: Cardinal Carter North 15th floor in the same area as L&D behind the nursing station area

CALL

SEE ABOVE NOTES FOR L&D. ADDITIONAL INFO BELOW:

  • Call is always on L&D, regardless what week you are on 

  • Start time: 6:00 pm 

  • Covers gyne, both inpatients and ED consults

  • Dinner: The team will order together – make sure you thank them! 

  • Call room: 15th floor Cardinal Carter South 

    • Follow instructions from MedEd, sheets and blankets in hallway closet/shelf

  • Attend seminar post-call
